Since arriving in the Shenandoah Valley in 2009, I have worked with adults, adolescents, and children individually and in family therapy. I earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Counseling and Supervision from James Madison University in 2021 and a Master of Arts degree in Marriage and Family Therapy and Counseling from Reformed Theological Seminary (Jackson, MS campus) in 2009. I spent my first 7 and a half years as a resident in counseling and professional counselor learning Structural Family Therapy in the style of Dr. Salvador Minuchin from Drs. Steve Greenstein, David Waters, and Gretchen Wilhelm. I apply my training in family-systems and attachment theory to my work easing the suffering and promoting the well being of individuals and families affected by a variety of mental health-related concerns, such as atypical neurodevelopment (e.g., autism and ADHD), severe abuse and neglect, and major depression.
During my doctoral journey, I had the good fortune to be honored with the NBCC Minority Fellowship Program Doctoral Fellowship and the Jonathan Davis Memorial Scholarship.
I am the Clinical Director for the Augusta Resource for Resilience, Opportunity, and Wellness (ARROW) Project, and I maintain a clinical practice there. I supervise trainees in the counseling field from practicum and internship students at the master's level to post-graduate residents in counseling toward licensure as professional counselors in Virginia. I have taught counseling-related courses on campus and online at Mary Baldwin University, Eastern Mennonite University, and James Madison University.
I serve as the Immediate Past President of the Central Valley Counselors Association (CVCA). In the past, I have served on the board of directors for the Shenandoah Valley Autism Partnership (SVAP) and have been an extern for the Association for Science in Autism Treatment (ASAT). I am a member of the American Counseling Association (ACA), the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES), the Society for Affectional, Intersex, and Gender Expansive Identities (SAIGE), the Virginia Counseling Association (VCA), CVCA, the Virginia Association for Couples and Family Counseling (VACFC), the Virginia Association for Spiritual, Ethical, and Religious Values in Counseling (VA-ASERVIC), the Virginia Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (VACES), and the Virginia Association for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Issues in Counseling (VA-ALGBTIC).
I married Nicki Shepard — who is also a professional counselor in the area — in 2007, and we welcomed our daughters Emily and Alice in the Summers of 2016 and 2018, respectively. We live in Staunton, Virginia.
